SEN LSA Colchester. Are you passionate about making a positive impact in the lives of children with special educational needs? We are currently seeking a dedicated SEN Learning Support Assistant to join a supportive SEN Hub team in a school based in Colchester, Essex.

As part of a close-knit team of three, you will work with a small group of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) who require additional support. This rewarding role offers the chance to provide tailored assistance, helping students overcome challenges and achieve their full potential in a nurturing environment

Responsibilities for SEN LSA Colchester:

  • Provide 1:1 support for a non-verbal child with profound ASD, ensuring their individual needs are met throughout the school day.
  • Implement sensory stimulation activities that are tailored to the child’s needs, helping them to engage with their environment and learning.
  • Assist with the use of alternative communication methods, such as PECS, Makaton, or other communication aids.
  • Help maintain a structured and calm learning environment to support the child’s emotional and sensory regulation.
  • Work closely with the SENCO, class teacher, and external specialists to follow and implement the child’s education, health, and care plan (EHCP).
  • Support the child with personal care needs, if required.
  • Monitor the child’s progress, maintaining detailed records, and providing feedback to the SENCO and parents.
  • Build a positive and trusting relationship with the child to support their social and emotional development.

Requirements:

  • Proven experience working with children with profound ASD or complex needs, particularly those who are non-verbal.
  • Knowledge of sensory needs and experience in implementing sensory-based learning or therapeutic activities.
  • Familiarity with communication tools such as PECS, Makaton, or alternative communication systems.
  • Patience, empathy, and a passion for supporting children with special educational needs.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, working closely with teachers, specialists, and parents.
  • Ability to provide personal care, if required.
  • A relevant qualification in SEN support or childcare (desirable but not essential) e.g. CACHE Level 3 Diploma in Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools, Autism Awareness, Makaton, etc
