SEN Teaching: A Transition Worth Making

SEN teaching is an empowering way to make a significant impact in the lives of SEND students? Perhaps you are a qualified teacher considered transitioning from mainstream teaching to Special Education Needs (SEN), but aren’t sure how?

“Do I have enough SEN teaching experience? Will I be good enough?” These concerns are natural, but there are ways to help ease the transition.

How To Become A SEN Teacher

There are many routes into teaching including starting as a volunteer, a university course, an apprenticeship, working towards this role as a supply learning support assistant or applying directly to schools. There are more teacher training options if you want to change career or specialise in teaching certain subjects.

SEN Teaching Approaches

One of the most exciting aspects of SEN teaching is the opportunity to explore innovative teaching approaches tailored to individual students’ needs.

Supporting SEN Student Progress

In SEN teaching, witnessing the progress and growth of students, no matter how small the steps, is incredibly gratifying. Whether it’s helping a child with dyslexia improve their reading skills or supporting a student with autism in developing social communication, every achievement is a cause for celebration.

Collaborating for SEN Success

Effective collaboration is at the heart of SEN teaching. Working closely with teaching assistants, support staff, and other professionals ensures that each student receives the support they require to reach their full potential. Together, we create a network of support that fosters student success.

Navigating SEN Challenges with Resilience

Transitioning to SEN may come with its challenges, but it also offers immense opportunities for personal and professional growth. From managing diverse learning needs to adapting teaching strategies, each challenge presents a chance to learn and evolve as a teacher.

Celebrating Diversity in Education

SEN teaching celebrates the uniqueness of every student and embraces diversity in all its forms. By creating inclusive learning environments, we foster a sense of belonging and acceptance among students, paving the way for a more inclusive society.

6 Top Tips For Transitioning From Mainstream To SEN:

  1.       Being able to adapt your approach is crucial. It’s essential to adjust your teaching approach      and lesson plans to suit the learning styles and abilities of SEN students. Being flexible ensures that each student’s needs are met.
  2.    Things may not always go as planned, and that’s okay. Being able to change plans quickly and think on your feet will really help.
  3.    Work closely with multidisciplinary teams to coordinate interventions and address the holistic needs of students effectively. Working together will be beneficial to the student, ensuring all their needs are met.
  4.  In SEN settings, you may have to look a little closer to see the wins! Celebrate every success, no matter how small, and keep them in mind as reminders of progress and achievement.
  5.  Look for courses and training opportunities to enhance your knowledge and confidence in working with SEN students. When you register with us, you will have access to lots of CPD courses to enhance your knowledge and confidence.
  6.  Try shadowing someone with more experience and speak to others about their experiences.

Transitioning From Mainstream teaching to SEN takes time

SEN teaching is a journey filled with opportunities for growth, collaboration, and making a difference in the lives of students. By embracing the unique challenges and rewards of SEN, you can embark on a fulfilling career path that leaves a lasting impact on both the students and their families.

Transitioning to a SEN school was a journey filled with uncertainty and trepidation for me. If I could offer just one piece of advice, it would be this. Be patient with yourself. Don’t rush yourself to make a decision whether transiting to SEN is for you after just one day. Adjusting to a new environment, where teaching and learning are approached from an entirely different perspective, takes time, time to understand, and time to embrace. You may find that what initially seemed daunting transforms into something amazing.
